Gaisce

What is Gaisce?

Gaisce is Ireland's National Challenge Award for young people, the country's most prestigious and respected individual Award programme. It is a challenge from the President of Ireland to the young people of Ireland.
In TY, we are all encouraged to take part in the Bronze Gaisce Award. It consists of four components: - An adventure journey of two days including a 25km walk - 13 weeks of community involvement - 13 weeks of physical recreation - 13 weeks of developing a personal skillThese components all come together to show that we are involved, enthusiastic and committed individuals. The Camping Trip in September qualifies as our adventure.
Remember to sign in every week and log your hours of physical, personal and community involvement!

Here's what I'm doing for the award:

Personal Skill:

For the Gaisce personal skill, I'm learning and improving my guitar playing. Each week I am learning a new song and performing it in front of my music class. Songs that I have learnt recently include 'Babylon' by 'David Gray' and 'All of Me' by 'John Legend'.

Physical Activity:

My parents have always said that I was a baby who loved the water. I used to spend hours, lolling carelessly in the pool. Over the years, unfortunately I haven't had the time to swim. This was a skill I knew I wanted to improve on in TY. Every week I complete thirty lengths of Shoreline swimming
pool in Bray. I hope to continue swimming weekly after completing the Gaisce program.

Community Involvement:

I have been a member of 5th Wicklow Sea Scouts for the past three years. Now I have graduated to become a 'venture' scout. As part of my role, I help out each Wednesday night by organising games and activities with the younger scouts. I thoroughly enjoy this job. I would recommend anyone with an interest in water sports to join the sea scouts. I have had incredible experiences over the past three years and I have made friendships that will last a lifetime.
